Men's and Women's Cross Country Showcases Standout Freshmen Performances in Debut at Maine
September 04, 2026 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
ORONO, Maine — Army West Point's men's and women's cross country teams both fell to host Maine in a season-opening dual meet at Saxl Park on September 4, 2026. The meeting marks the sixth consecutive season the two teams have met to start the year, with Army suffering defeat for the second consecutive year, despite now holding an 8-2 all-time series record for both programs.
Women's 5000 Meters
Maine won the team battle 20-37. The Black Knights got a strong runner-up finish from freshman Alexandra Himebauch, who crossed in 18:29.7 — the fastest time by an Army runner and a mark that stands as a collegiate debut PR for the first-year. Junior Chloe Esponda was next in for the Black Knights, taking sixth in 18:39.7, followed by freshman Stephanie Grden in eighth (18:44.3). Freshman Lily Coy (10th, 18:55.5) and senior Kate Merritt (11th, 19:06.1) rounded out Army's scoring five. Maine's pack running proved decisive, placing four of its top five runners inside the top five spots overall, led by winner Katelyn Macnamara (18:13.9).
Men's 8000 Meters
Army claimed the top two individual spots but still dropped the team score, 25-35. Freshman Issaiah McCorvey won the race outright in 25:28.6, with fellow freshman Lyle Mideiros right behind him in second (25:34.7) — both collegiate debut performances. However, Maine's depth took over from there, sweeping places 3 through 8 to build an insurmountable cushion before Army's third scorer, junior Christian Bachmann, crossed in ninth (25:55.4). Sophomore Eli Ahten (11th, 25:56.9) and freshman Sawyer Lisk (12th, 26:04.0) completed the Black Knights' scoring lineup.
