Volleyball Wins UTA Tournament Outright with 3-0 Win Over Mavericks

ARLINGTON, Texas — Army West Point volleyball (5-1) closed out its weekend at the UTA Tournament with a 3-0 victory over host UT Arlington (3-2) on Saturday at College Park Center, sweeping the Mavericks, 25-21, 25-20 and 26-24.
With the win, the Black Knights finish the UTA Tournament 3-0, including sweeps over Sam Houston State and Kent State. With their undefeated weekend, which included not dropping a single set, they win the UTA Tournament outright.
How It Happened
Army overcame an early deficit to take the opening set, with Myrick and Jones providing much of the offensive spark.
UT Arlington jumped ahead 3-0 before Michelle Parker put Army on the board. Jones followed with her first kill, and Myrick delivered three kills during the Black Knights' early push to keep Army within striking distance.
The Mavericks stretched their advantage to 12-8, but Jones helped Army begin its comeback with a kill before Hannah Hankerson followed with a service ace. Jones added two more kills around the media timeout before Myrick connected to cut the deficit to 17-15.
Army's block helped shift the momentum from there. Bender came up with a solo rejection to bring the Black Knights within one at 17-16, and Army tied the frame on the following point.
Myrick delivered another kill to even the score at 18-18 before Army took its first lead at 19-18. Liliana Fox extended the run with a kill, and Jones took over late, recording three kills as Army moved ahead, 22-20.
Parker and Marlee Lightsey helped the Black Knights finish the frame as Army completed the comeback with a 25-21 victory.
Myrick and Jones combined for 11 of Army's 16 kills in the opening set. Myrick was nearly flawless with five kills on seven attacks without an error for a .714 hitting percentage, while Jones recorded six kills on nine swings and hit .556. Army hit .361 as a team in the frame.
The Black Knights carried the momentum into the second set, where Bender and Myrick helped Army's block take control of the frame.
Jones opened the scoring with back-to-back kills before Naomi Chinchar delivered a service ace to help Army build a 5-2 advantage. Hankerson and Lightsey followed with kills before Myrick pushed the Black Knights ahead, 8-4.
Bender and Fox then combined for Army's first block of the set to make it 9-4. On the very next rally, Bender teamed with Myrick for another rejection, extending the advantage to 10-4.
Bender remained involved offensively with a kill as Army continued to control the frame, while Lightsey added a pair of kills.
The Black Knights' block struck again when Parker and Myrick combined for a rejection to stretch the lead to 18-11. Bender and Myrick then teamed up once again, denying UT Arlington at the net to give Army a 20-14 advantage.
Myrick had a hand in three of Army's four blocks in the second set, while Bender also contributed to three, helping the Black Knights hold the Mavericks to just a .023 hitting percentage in the frame.
UT Arlington attempted to cut into the margin late, but Jones took control offensively. She recorded four of Army's final five kills before Myrick closed the set with a kill for the 25-20 victory and a 2-0 match advantage.
Jones finished the second set with six kills on seven attacks without an error, hitting .857.
Army's block continued to make its presence felt in the third set as the Black Knights built a sizable lead before withstanding a late UT Arlington comeback.
Hankerson opened the frame with a service ace before Jones, Parker and Myrick each contributed kills. Fox then delivered three kills during an early stretch to help Army build a 9-5 advantage.
Parker and Jones combined for a block to make it 12-8 before a Ryan Leclair service ace later extended the lead to 16-11.
Bender and Myrick then helped Army deliver consecutive blocks. Bender first teamed with Fox to turn back a UT Arlington attack and make it 17-11. On the next rally, Bender and Myrick combined for another rejection, extending the lead to 18-11.
Myrick followed the defensive play with a kill and later added another to give Army a 20-13 advantage.
The Mavericks responded with their strongest run of the match, eventually erasing the deficit and moving ahead, 22-21.
Jones stopped the run with a kill to tie the frame at 22 before a UT Arlington attack error put Army back in front. Jones followed with another kill to give the Black Knights match point at 24-22.
UT Arlington answered with two points to even the set at 24, but Army stayed composed. Consecutive Mavericks attack errors gave the Black Knights the final two points, securing the 26-24 victory and completing the sweep.
Black Knight Bullet Points
- Juliette Myrick delivered a complete performance on both sides of the net, finishing with 10 kills on 20 attacks without an error for a .500 hitting percentage. She also totaled 18 assists, nine digs and four block assists for 12.0 points.
- Myrick's blocking was particularly impactful in the second set, when she contributed to three of Army's four team blocks. She teamed with Bender twice and Parker once as Army held UT Arlington to a .023 hitting percentage in the frame.
- Breelyn Bender was at the center of Army's blocking effort, contributing to six blocks with one solo rejection and five block assists. Bender recorded Army's lone solo block and finished with a match-high five block assists.
- Bender contributed to three blocks in the second set and two more in the third. She teamed with Myrick for blocks in both frames, with the duo helping Army control the net during key stretches of the sweep.
- Kennedy Jones led Army offensively with a match-high 16 kills on 26 swings, hitting .462. She added one solo block and one block assist and finished with a match-high 16.5 points.
- Jones was especially effective through the first two sets, totaling 12 kills. She recorded six kills while hitting .556 in the opener before putting down six kills on seven error-free swings for an .857 hitting percentage in the second.
- Army totaled eight team blocks, with Bender recording five block assists, Myrick four, Parker two, Fox two and Jones one. Bender also added a solo block as the Black Knights consistently challenged UT Arlington's attack at the net.
- The Black Knights' blocking effort helped hold UT Arlington to a .099 hitting percentage for the match. The Mavericks hit just .023 in the second set and .071 in the third while committing 25 attack errors.
- Army finished with 43 kills and a .229 hitting percentage, including a match-best .361 in the opening set. The Black Knights added 48 digs, led by Nicole Stroud's 11, while Myrick recorded nine and Lightsey added eight.

Army stays on the road, but returns to New York, heading to Long Island and the Davis S. Mack Physical Education Center in New Hempstead for the Hofstra Tournament.
The Black Knights will play two games on Friday, September 11, first taking on the Liberty University Flames at 12 p.m., followed by a matchup with Fairfield at 7 p.m.
Their appearance at the Hofstra Tournament will conclude on Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. taking on tournament host, the Hofstra University Pride.
