Head coach Paul Peck has led the Army West Point women's tennis program to unprecedented success as the dominant force in the Patriot League since taking the reins in the spring of 1995. Peck has managed a winning record every season on the Banks of the Hudson since 1996 and enters his 30th season at the helm of the Black Knights in 2024-25.
In 2024-25, Peck won Patriot League Coach of the Year honors for the 17th time, thanks in part to the tireless efforts of his staff and players. The Black Knights have 16 Patriot League Tournament titles in Peck’s tenure, as well as berths to the NCAA Tournament. This includes a nine-year run from 2005-13 in which Army won the league title each season.
Army finished the 24-25 season at 24-6 overall and a perfect 8-0 mark in Patriot League regular season matches, claiming the No. 1 seed at the Patriot League Championships. The Black Knights defeated Navy 4-1 in the star match April 5, ending a three-match skid in star competitions vs. the Mids.
Four Black Knights players were named to the Second Team All-League. Seniors Cooper Jackson and Jenna Sabile, plus juniors Vennmukiil Mathivanan and Emma Sy each garnered all-conference honors. Jackson and Sabile solidified the No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles spots in 2025. Mathivanan finished the season 10-3 in dual singles matches and 6-0 in Patriot League matches, while Sy finished 26-4 in overall singles and 8-1 in Patriot League singles matches. Additionally, Ylan Duong was named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team and the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
On Feb. 16, 2024, Peck’s team defeated Air Force in Lake Nona, Fla. as he became the winningest varsity coach in USMA history, with his 543rd career victory. Upon the conclusion of the 2024 season, Peck’s career record stands at 553-257.
The Black Knights finished the 2023-24 campaign 18-10 overall, which included 15 shutouts, second-most in a single season in Army history. Cooper Jackson was named to the Patriot League All-Conference First Team and Jenna Sabile made the Second Team.
Army was seeking a Patriot League title defense in 2022-23, and was one win away from a return trip to the NCAA Championships. Although the Black Knights came up one match short, the squad enjoyed a Patriot League Tournament Semifinal win over rival Navy and finished 22-9 on the year. The duo of Cooper Jackson and Paige Herremans was also named Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year.
In 2021-22, the Black Knights 25-10 overall, won the Patriot League Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Avenging regular season losses to Navy and Boston University in the postseason, Army won the doubles point and three singles matches to dispatch Boston U. in the league championship match. Paola Bou was named John “Pat” Rooney Award Patriot League Tournament MVP.
In Spring of 2022, Army set a program record for shutout wins in a year, with 20, as well as having the second-most amount of total wins in a season.
After the cancelation of the Fall season, Peck led Army to a 12-4 (6-1 PL) record in the Spring while outscoring opponents 77-29 along the way. The 2021 season was also one filled with honors and accolades for Peck's Black Knights. The Patriot League recognized three Cadets with major awards including the conference's Player of the Year, Ana Joyner who went 8-1 on the first singles court and the Doubles Team of the Year Stephanie Dolehide and Caroline Vincent who posted a 9-2 mark playing together in doubles action. Dolehide was also named the national award winner of the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award.
Peck was instrumental in the development of Joyner, who won Patriot League Player of the Year three times (2019, 2021 & 2022), missing out only when the conference slate of matches was cancelled in 2020.
Army led a 13-7 record in the 2019-20 season and were set up for conference success leading into Patriot League play before having the season cut short due to the pandemic.
Peck led the Black Knights to their 10th and 11th straight Patriot League titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19. The team boasted a 21-7 (6-1 PL) in 17-18 and a 22-8 (5-2 PL) in 18-19, with key championships victories over Boston University and Navy, on their way to two more appearances and 15 total in the NCAA tournament. The Black Knights saw two tough matchups with Texas Tech and Washington University.
In the 2016-17 campaign, the Black Knights went 21-7 and 7-0 in the Patriot League and were the runner-ups in the league tournament. It was the 10th time in 13 years that Peck has coached Army to a 20+ win season. Army tied its Patriot League record for number of league wins in a season with a perfect 7-0 mark. Arguably one of Peck's most dominant teams, the 2016-17 squad authored a program-record 12 shutouts in 28 matches.
Peck also coached the league's best doubles tandem as Kirby Einck and Gloria Son were named the inaugural Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year after going 13-8 in duals.
The Black Knights captured a ninth-straight Patriot League title in April of 2013, accompanied by the program's 13th NCAA Tournament appearance. Peck was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for a 13th time in 2013, after guiding a young squad which featured three freshmen in the starting lineup.
From 2002-2014, Peck guided the Black Knights to 67 consecutive regular-season victories over Patriot League foes. He also became the most successful coach in the history of the program with his 381st career win.
Peck has mentored eight Patriot League Players of the Year in Niki Flach (2007), Anne Houghton (2008, 2009, 2011), Jamila Paul (2012) and Ana Joyner (2018, 2019, 2021) while placing a multitude of others on the all-league teams. In 2010, Houghton became the first Army player in program history to receive an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional ranking, landing at #20 in the March poll.
Two players from the 2015 squad earned all-star status in the Patriot League, with Carolyn Pitman garnering first team honors and Eva Sung making the second team. It was the second-straight year Pitman was honored as a first team member.
A 1984 honors graduate of the University of Illinois, Peck enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1985 and received his commission at officer candidate school at Fort Benning, Ga. He spent three years as a platoon leader in an artillery unit in Germany. Later, Peck commanded an Alpha Battery of 5/18 FA during Operation Desert Storm, earning a Bronze Star for his accomplishments during the war. He also received the MacArthur Leadership Award for III Corp Artillery, as the most outstanding officer who exemplified the Army code.
After receiving a master's degree in exercise physiology from Illinois, Peck was assigned to teach in the Academy's Department of Physical Education. In 1997, he was promoted to the rank of Major before retiring from the Army.
Just as notable as his military pursuits are his accomplishments on the tennis court. After being ranked regionally in the Midwest as a junior player, Peck went on to play at the collegiate level and in many USTA tournaments as an adult. Ranked as high as eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference, he won the Duncan Open in 1990, and twice was selected to play for the All-Army tennis team. Peck is also a USPTA and USPTR certified pro.
In the spring of 2012, Peck was honored with the Mike Krzyzewski Teaching Character Through Sport Award. Peck was awarded this due to his outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletics and encompassing the Army values of integrity, respect, selfless service, duty, honor, loyalty and personal courage.
A native of Mundelein, Ill., Peck currently resides at West Point with his wife, Karen.
