WASHINGTON - American scored three goals in the final 18 minutes of regulation as the host Eagles defeated Army, 3-0, in a Patriot League men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.
Adem Gokturk, Tyler Collins and Alassane Kane each tallied second half markers to lead American (5-7-1, 3-0-0 PL) to its fourth win in its last five matches.
Army (5-7-0, 1-2-0 PL) carried play for much of the match, but the Black Knights could not get anything past American goalkeepers Matt Makowski or Billy Knutsen.
After over 70 minutes of scoreless soccer, Gokturk put American on the scoreboard at the 72:01 mark when he tallied off a feed from Colin Seigfreid.
Less than three minutes later, Collins made it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles when he took a pass from Gokturk and scored at the 74:45 mark.
Kane capped the scoring with 4:05 to play as he converted a penalty kick.
Freshman Tommy Jaeger led the Army offense with two shots on goal.
American outshot Army, 11-9, but the Black Knights held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Army freshman goalkeeper John Marinelli (5-7-0) was credited with one saves in the losing effort. Fellow freshman Winston Boldt came on and played the final 13:26 in the Black Knight goal.
Knutsen (2-0-0) made three second half saves to pick up the victory for American.
Army resumes its three-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 15, when the Black Knights travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to face Patriot League rival Colgate. Kickoff for the conference clash is slated for 4 p.m.
Match Notes: Army falls to 2-9-1 all-time versus American ... the Black Knights are 0-6-0 all-time versus the Eagles in Washington, D.C.
