Rifle Team Defeats Ohio State, 4634-4611

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Richard Calvin recorded his second straight medalist honors in air rifle and fourth this season, along with sharing runner-up honors in smallbore with teammate Joseph Todaro, in leading Army to a 4634-4611 win over Ohio State Saturday at the Hugh W. Wylie Range.
The Black Knights improved to 6-3 with their first win in 2012, while tying last year's victory mark. The Buckeyes, who will host this year's NCAA Championships in March, fell to 5-4.
Calvin nipped teammate Kelly Buck by a point in beating her 588-587 for first-place honors in air rifle. It is the fourth time this season, twice in the fall and twice during the winter, that Calvin has earned medalist honors in that discipline. Buck's 587 is one shy of her season-high 588 recorded during the fall session, and it is the third time this season she has finished runner-up in air rifle.
Joining Calvin and Buck on Army's air rifle unit that combined for a 2333 were Michael Matthews (580) and Zachary Wells (578). The Black Knights outpointed Ohio State by 12 points for their highest team score since closing out the fall with a 2337 in a triangular with TCU and Murray State.
Buckeye Amanda Furrer garnered medalist honors in smallbore with a 579, but Army swept the next five spots and six of eight for a 2301 team composite in besting Ohio State by 11 points.
Calvin and Todaro trailed Furrer's winning score by three points in firing 576s in tying for second place. It is Calvin's highest finish this season in that discipline, and is the third time that Todaro has placed runner-up in 2011-12. Matthews and Buck rounded out Army's unit with respective scores of 575 and 574.
"We struggled a bit due to lighting in the range, but we finished strong," noted Army head coach Ron Wigger. "Our air rifle score is one of our better ones this season."
The Black Knights head to Philadelphia, Pa., next weekend to compete at the NRA Sectionals being hosted by USP.
