LEXTINGTON, Va. - - Army's young rifle team improved to 3-2 on the year and 2-1 in the Great America Rifle Conference following a 4618-4587 win over North Carolina State at the Kilbourne Rifle Range Saturday afternoon on the campus of VMI.
Junior team captain Alyssa Gestl tied for medalist honors in air rifle with NC State's Dani Foster as both fired a 588, and freshman Josh Martin took first-place honors in smallbore with a 578 as Army went one-two in that event. Sophomore Marvin Lewis tied with the Wolfpack's Lucas Kozeniesky for runner-up honors as each scored a 576.
Army grabbed six of the top eight sports in smallbore and seven of the first 10 places in air rifle.
Joining Gestl on the air rifle team that was edged by the Wolfpack, 2334-2327, were Lewis (583), Martin (578) and junior Olivia Nardone (578). Gestl's 588 is a season high and just two points shy of her career mark.
The Black Knights' 38-point domination (2291-2253) in smallbore carried the team to their second conference victory against just one loss. Army's team composite of 2291 is just one point shy of its season high. Joining Martin and Lewis in rounding out that unit were Allen Solida (570) and Gestl (567).
"It was a good performance and everyone is working hard," said assistant coach Rick Johnson. "We are a young team, and I was pleased with the effort, but we are not where we think we should be, so it is a little bit frustrating."
The Black Knights leave the dual meet circuit next week when they participate at the President's Trophy Match being hosted by the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, Nov. 1. Army is the defending champion after wrestling the title from Air Force last year.
