Sprint Football to Close Out Road Trip on Saturday

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point sprint football team looks to keep its record spotless this weekend in its final contest away from the comforts of Shea Stadium on Saturday in a 1 p.m. matchup at Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce took down rival service academy Navy last Friday by the score of 18-16 for arguably the team's biggest win in its three-year history.
"That win for them certainly got our attention," said head coach Mark West. "Any time Navy loses to someone other than us, it's an eye-opener because it doesn't happen too often. We know they are a good football team, and they're riding on cloud nine coming off that win. They're going to play even better against us."
The Black Knights have been dominant on the gridiron through four games, having scored an average of just under 50 points per game while yielding nothing defensively to their opponents. They also lead the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) in scoring offense, total offense, scoring defense and total defense. That defensive production is due to being the best in the league in turnover margin, interceptions and sacks. Not only does Army get the ball back on defense, but it also stops the opposition in key situations. The Black Knights have stopped the most third down conversions and have the lowest opponent third down conversion percentage in the CSFL.
All of that success, especially early in a season, can sometimes get into the heads of the players and coaches and bring a feeling of complacency, but the Black Knights have tried to stray from that as much as possible.
"I think it's a natural tendency for teams to get a little complacent when you have so much success," said West. "Certainly, we've garnered against that all season, but I think last week was the first time as head coach this season that I maybe saw a little bit of that. We definitely dedicated ourselves to refocusing this week, and, so far, practices have been just that."
The Falcons defense generated seven interceptions against Navy and was able to show a multitude of looks in their blitz packages that made it difficult to contain from an offensive standpoint. West and his staff are well aware of this, and has preached to his veteran offensive line that keeping the quarterback on his feet is a priority this week.
"We've done a good job, so far, this week of preparing for the different looks their defense can give you," said West. "Whether it's a 4-2 look, a 3-3 stacked look or maybe some other looks we haven't seen this year, we've been preparing for everything. Their linebackers move around a lot and will blitz from different locations and different gaps. All you really can do is study the film and hope that you practiced enough to cover everything. We've done a good job of that this week so far, but we've got a couple more days to go."
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H.
