EL PASO, Texas – The Army West Point golf team went five-under in the final round of competition at the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational to jump up to 10th place. The Black Knights totaled 291-291-283—865 (+1) at the Butterfield Trail Golf Course to finish ahead of San Jose State, George Washington, Air Force, UTEP 'B' and Texas State.
Â
"Dean had a great tournament," said head coach Brian Watts. "He has been playing solid golf, but was having a hard time putting up a good number. He was able to go out and make some birdies and eagles in the last couple of days to put solid rounds together. Marcus played well for us in the last two rounds, he grinded it out and just finds a way to get the job done. My hat goes off to him for going out there regardless of the circumstances."
Â
Dean Sakata was the Cadets' top finisher and ranked tied for 11th. He totaled 66 strokes in today's final round which ties his previously set career and program-low score. Throughout the weekend Sakata carded a 70-74-66—210 (-6).
Â
"We knew the conditions were right for low scoring and our players had to get in the mindset to make a lot of birdies to have a chance to compete," said Watts. "This fall was a great experience for the plebes for them to be in the lineup and travel. Going into the spring season having Justin and Eric back in the lineup is only going to make this team more competitive and deeper than it has been in a long time. Our expectations this spring will be high as we look forward to the schedule starting in February."
Â
Marcus Plunkett was Army's second-best finisher after totaling 74-69-70—213 (-3) to rank T22. Peter Kim finished tied for 52nd with a four-over score of 220. Nick Turner went eight-over, while Parker Harris totaled 228 strokes.
The Black Knights led the field in eagles with seven, besting the next best team by three. Harris, Sakata and Plunkett all tallied two each, while Turner recorded one. Kim led the team with 13 birdies.
Â
Kansas went 38-under on the weekend to finish atop the leaderboard. St. Mary's was second (27), followed by UTEP (-26), Marquette (-24) and Idaho (-16).
Â
The Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational concludes the golf team's fall season. The 2016 spring schedule will be released at a later date with contests beginning in February.
