DAY ONE RESULTS
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Army West Point golf team competed to a T13th-place finish after the first round of the Hayt Collegiate Invitational Friday.
Â
"It was a struggle for us today, said head coach Brian Watts. "The conditions were tough, but we didn't manage our golf ball or emotions like we needed to. There was a few holes out there that ate our lunch today, so we've made our adjustments and expect to see lower scores for the last two rounds."
Army is tied for 13th with a total of 315 (+27). No. 37 North Florida leads the pack with a five-over score of 293.
Â
Marcus Plunkett leads the Black Knights with a four-over score of 76. The senior was even on the front nine with two birdies and went four-over on the back nine of the course to rank tied for 26th.
Â
Dean Sakata is the Cadets' second-best finisher at T33rd. He finished the day at five-over with three birdies, two of which came in the back nine to total 77 strokes on the day. He is followed by Matt Plunkett who is tied for 62nd with 80 strokes. He closed the day with a birdie on the 18th hole.
Â
Peter Kim (T77) and Justin Pagila (T86) competed to 82 and 86 strokes, respectively.
"I was proud of the few guys who started off slow and were able to grind it out to a good finish," added Watts. "You never know what to expect from the first tournament round of the year, but I know the team is anxious to get back out there tomorrow. We had a great practice after the round and spent some time with former Army Soldiers who always provide our cadets with some inspiration!"
Â
The Black Knights will be back in action for another 18-holes tomorrow at the Sawgrass Country Club.
Â
The Sawgrass Oceanside course (East-West) is a par-72, 6,966-yard course. It has been host to a number of professional and amateur events including the PGA Tour's Tournament Players Championship from 1977-81 when the course tested some of the greatest players of all time.
