Rifle Places Seventh In SB First Day Of GARC Championships

OXFORD, Miss. - Army sophomore Danielle Cuomo just missed qualifying for the individual finals (top eight) in smallbore on center shots the opening day of the Great America Rifle Conference Championships being held at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center on the campus of Ole Miss Saturday.
The No. 12 Black Knights, who posted a 5-3 mark in conference matches during the regular-season, finished seventh in smallbore with a four-man relay score of 2272, two points higher than ninth-place Navy.
Cuomo and West Virginia's Ziva Dvorsak both fired 580s, but a 27-22 margin in center shots earned Dvorsak the final eighth spot for the individual finals with Cuomo finishing ninth in the relay scoring.
Team captain Alyssa Gestl shot a 574 to place 25th among the field of 65 shooters in joining Cuomo, Allen Solida (562) and Josh Martin (556) on Army's relay scoring unit that fired a 2272 in nipping North Carolina State by a point for seventh place.
No. 5 Kentucky edged No. 1 West Virginia, the regular-season champion, for the team title in smallbore on center shots. Both teams posted a 2323, but the Wildcats recorded 120 centers to the Mountaineers' 115.
Kentucky's Connor Davis was medalist with a 588, edging Akron's Matt Chezem and West Virginia's Maren Prediger by two points for the title. Chezem bested Prediger 31-28 in center shots for runner-up honors.
The championship concludes Sunday with air rifle, and Army is hoping to have a strong showing in its bid to move up in the final standings. The first relay begins at 8 a.m. followed by the second relay at 10:15. The finals will be at 12:15 p.m.
