LAST TIME OUT
The Black Knights last competed on Dec. 5 when VMI came to town. Army won 4636-4502 in aggregate. Army notched a 2309-2205 victory in smallbore and had a 2327-2297 advantage in air rifle. Army took the top seven spots overall while netting the top nine in smallbore and top five in air rifle.
Senior Alyssa Gestl and junior Libby Mostert tied the Black Knights season-high for air rifle with a score of 590. Mostert, however, did not count towards the NCAA scoring. Gestl tied junior Danielle Cuomo in individual aggregate score with a 1,164 score. The win was Army's second of the season.
"Alyssa shot 590 a couple times so it's starting to become the norm," said Army head coach Web Wright. "I'm pretty confident we can count on her each match."
SCOUTING KENTUCKY
The Wildcats had a strong fall season. They peaked as high as first in the CRCA rankings but their scores dropped over their final two matches before the break. After failing to meet a 4,697 aggregate score just once in their first six matches, Kentucky has not hit that mark in back-to-back meets including a season-low 4,657 in their final meet.
Connor Davis missed the Wildcats last match. The eight-time All-American, who is second on the team with a 1,174.6 aggregate average, sat out when Kentucky hosted Navy and Morehead State on November 21.
"Kentucky will be tough," continued Wright. "But if we put together a good performance, I think we can make them sweat a little bit."
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA STATE
North Carolina State settled down after an up and down opening to the year. The Wolfpack posted its season-low (4,593 aggregate) in their opening meet and followed with a season-high score of 4,654. Since then, NC State's best and worst performances have been separated by just 23 points.
Lucas Kozeniesky has been the Wolfpack's top shooter. The sophomore has shot a 594 or better on three occasions this year and has shot 584 or better in smallbore four times.
"I think overall, we have a little more depth," stated Wright. "It should be a good match."
NEXT UP: #15 Akron
Army has over a week off until its next match. The Black Knights will travel to Palmyra, Pa. to take on Akron. The Zips head into this weekend with a 2-5 record and face No. 1 West Virginia on Sunday. The 15th-ranked Akron team is led by sophomore Zachary Strohl. He is averaging just over 1,157 in aggregate scoring.
