Rifle Travels to Face Akron
January 30, 2016 | Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point rifle team travels to Palmyra, Pa. on Sunday, Jan. 31, to face No. 16 Akron in the 2016 Palmyra Invitational. The Black Knights are looking to shake a stretch of five straight losses in the GARC and enter at 2-7 overall and 1-5 in conference. The Zips sport a 3-5 record this season and are 1-4 in the GARC.
While the match only counts towards Akron for NCAA scoring, it is also part of the NRA Collegiate Section Match.
"It will be good to get on the road again," said Army head coach Web Wright. "This match is not only against Akron, but it will also count as our NRA Collegiate Section Match, so this score will be compared across the country and towards NCAA Championship selection."

LAST TIME OUT
Army shot admirably against North Carolina State in its last outing but ultimately lost 4653-4641 in aggregate. The Wolfpack took smallbore 2306-2297 and air rifle 2347-2344.
Junior Marvin Lewis led the Black Knights with a 591 score in air rifle, a career-high and Army season-high. His shooting was good enough for third place as Army took positions three through eight in air rifle.
Freshman Nathan Brewer's smallbore score of 580 earned him runner-up honors. It was only the 10th time this season anyone for the Black Knights has shot 580 or better in smallbore.
SCOUTING AKRON
The Zips received a season-best performance from Zach Strohl last week. Akron's top shooter had an 1166 aggregate against Coast Guard. The junior is the only Zip averaging above a 580 in air rifle as his average sits at a 587.2 right now.
Freshman Caleb Lloyd has been Akron's best smallbore shooter and had back-to-back 580-or-better performances in that respect until last week. He is currently pacing the Zips with a 575.1 in smallbore.
NEXT UP: at #14 NAVY – February 6, 2016 – STAR MATCH
Army heads to Annapolis, Md., next Saturday to face Navy in the Star Match. The two rivals met earlier this season in the President's Trophy Match where the Black Knights placed second among the four service academies competing and the Midshipmen finished third. For Wright, it will be the first time he travels to face the team his father coached in the 1970's and 1980's, but he is focused on getting his team on track this week.
"I look forward to good things in the precursor to our Star match next weekend."
