Men's Tennis Breaks FAU's Heart with 4-3 Win

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Army West Point men's tennis team defeated Florida Atlantic on Sunday with a narrow 4-3 win. The Black Knights improved to 3-1 with the Valentine's Day victory while the Owls fall to 4-5 on the season.
Army had to battle for the victory in doubles play. It ultimately came down to the combination of Kyles Barnes and David Mitchell in the third doubles match as they won 7-6 to secure the doubles point.
The Black Knights fell in the top three singles spots but were able to win the last three singles positions to take the victory but it did not come easy. Harrison McCormick edged Alexander Gitin 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the fourth singles battle. Michael Nguyen then cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win the fifth singles position setting up Michael Sienko for a shot to claim the win in the final singles position. Sienko, going against Gerald Nickerson for the Owls, took the first set 6-4 before a grueling second set that was settled by a tiebreaker. The Cadets sophomore won 11-9 to take the win.
Army now takes on Miami (Fla.) in a doubleheader. The Hurricanes enter with a 3-3 record this season.
