WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's tennis team swept both of its opponents on Saturday at home. The Black Knights defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 4-2 and then shutout Sacred Heart 5-0 to improve its record to 5-2. The Knights fell to 0-2 while the Pioneers are now 2-3 this season.
Fairleigh Dickinson jumped out to lead against Army by taking the doubles point. The Black Knights responded with strong play in the singles competitions, losing only one match while another went unfinished. In total, Army won eight of the 10 sets in the completed singles matches.
The Cadets faced less resistance in the match against Sacred Heart. After taking the point in doubles action, Army lost only one set across the four finished singles matches.
Austin McCasin returned to singles play with two victories on the day. The senior won both of his matches in the fifth singles position without dropping a set and is now 4-0 this season.
Grant Riechmann snapped out of his losing streak with two wins in the top singles spot. The junior responded from losing the second set against Sacred Heart's Brian Power with a 6-0 win in the third set.
The Black Knights hit the road again next weekend as they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for a pair of games. The first comes against Minnesota who was ranked tied for 45th in the nation entering the weekend. The other comes against Illinois State who is off to a 4-4 start this year.
