Rifle Travels to Oxford for GARC Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point rifle team travels to Oxford, Miss., for the GARC Championships this weekend. The No. 12 Black Knights boast a 5-7 record and have rattled off three straight victories. Army is 3-5 this season in conference. The action begins Friday, Feb. 26, at 9 a.m. and continues to Saturday, Feb. 27.
Not only is a conference title at stake for the Black Knights, but this is also the final opportunity to add to their NCAA Championships resume.
"The team is focused and ready to get the job done," said Army head coach Web Wright III.

LAST TIME OUT
The Black Knights defeated the University of Sciences 4654-4141 in its NCAA Qualifier match last Saturday. They had their second-best shooting efforts in aggregate score (4654) and smallbore (2315).
Senior Alyssa Gestl shot a career-best 593 in air rifle and 1172 aggregate. She had the top individual score of the match and earned medalist honors in air rifle, while her 579 smallbore score tied junior Danielle Cuomo for runner-up.
Freshman Rick Arnold, sophomore Sarah Nakata, and freshman Payne Nunn all had personal-bests in air rifle on the day. Nakata's 587 was good enough for runner-up while Nunn was a close third-place with a 586. Arnold's 583 put him in fifth place for the match.
"We has some really good performances last week and if we stay consistent, I think we can put some cadets into the finals round of the competition," stated Wright.
SCOUTING THE GARC
The GARC is the premier conference in rifle with No. 1 West Virginia and No. 3 Kentucky atop the conference. In total, the conference has four top 10 teams and six total in the top 15.
Individually, the conference features the three shooters that have shot the nation-best 1186 aggregate score this season. Hanna Carr of Kentucky, Garrett Spurgeon of West Virginia, and Ginny Thrasher of West Virginia all achieved that mark earlier this season with Thrasher's coming last weekend.

This year's NCAA Championships are hosted by Akron and will take place the weekend of March 11-12.
