WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's tennis team secured two wins on Friday, Feb. 5 as the Black Knights defeated Connecticut 5-2 and Wagner 5-0 while beginning their spring season. Army starts the year 2-0 while the Huskies drop to 0-6 and the Seahawks slip to 0-1.
The victory against Connecticut was a milestone win for Army head coach Jim Poling. It was his 200th career victory while leading the Black Knights program.
Army started the day off with two 6-2 victories in doubles against UConn by the pairings of Grant Reichmann and Sam Lampman in the top doubles position and Austin McCasin and Michael Sienko in the third doubles slot. The second-seeded doubles match went unfinished as the two Army victories already clinched the point.
The Black Knights then won the second through fifth singles matches to take the 5-2 victory over the Huskies. Army did not lose a singles set in those four matches.
Army coasted through the match against Wagner, not losing a single set. David Mitchell and Harrison McCormick had strong performances in the top two singles contests, as Mitchell defeated Dale Sandy 6-2, 6-2 while McCormick topped Lucas Lu 6-1, 6-2.
The Cadets return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 7 to face Yale. The Bulldogs, who have started the season 2-2, are slated to face Army at 2:00 p.m. This is the 75th meeting between the two schools, the fourth-most played series in the Black Knights history.
