Final Results
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's tennis team battled Yale on Sunday afternoon but fell short 5-2. The Black Knights hosted the Bulldogs in the diamond anniversary meeting of the two as Yale improves to 64-11 in the match-up. Army moves to 2-1 on the year while Yale is 4-2.
The Black Knights opened the day strong, securing the point in doubles. The duos of Sam Lampman/Michael Nguyen and Kyle Barnes/Austin McCasin each won 6-4. The former's victory was particular impressive as nationally ranked Ziqi Wang teamed with Martin Svenning for Yale in the loss.
Army suffered an early setback in singles as Lampman retired due to injury in the top singles match against Z. Wang. Nguyen would be the only Black Knight to win in singles, topping Stefan Doehler 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The second and third singles matches each came down to the wire as well though. Svenning held off Grant Riechmann 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Yale's Alex Hagermoser nearly lost to David Mitchell. After losing 6-2 in the first set, the Army freshman fought back in the second set to win 7-5. Mitchell nearly won his second career singles match but ultimately fell 6-4.
The Black Knights begin their first road trip of the season next weekend as they head to the Sunshine State. There they will face Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Feb. 14, and Miami on Monday, Feb. 15., in a doubleheader.
