Brewer Makes Smallbore Finals, Finishes Seventh

AKRON, Ohio – Freshman Nathan Brewer of the Army West Point rifle team made the most of his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. He shot a 583 to make the smallbore championships where he placed seventh with a finals score of 401.8. The championships are being held in Akron, Ohio this year.
It came down to the last shot for Brewer to even the make the championship round. The young shooter was the last individual on the range and needed to shoot a bullseye to earn his spot in the final eight. Brewer made the shot he needed to and closed the second station of standing with a 99 score.
Brewer was the only individual invite to make the final eight and one of only three freshmen to do so.
Ginny Thrasher of West Virginia, a fellow freshman, led the Mountaineers to the smallbore title. They scored 2338 as a team and Thrasher tallied 461.5 points in the finals. Meelis Kiisk earned runner-up honors as the fellow West Virginia shooter shot a 455.3 in the finals.
Senior Alyssa Gestl will compete tomorrow in the air rifle championships. This will be the third time in her four-year career that Gestl will represent the Black Knights at the NCAAs, the first time as an individual invite.
