WEST POINT, N.Y. - It was a momentous day for the Army West Point women's tennis team. The Black Knights topped Siena 4-0 and Rhode Island 7-0 to improve to 13-3 this season. It is the third time in the last four years they have won 13 of their first 16 matches, reaching the NCAA Tournament the last two times. The Saints fall to 1-3 this year while the Rams are 1-6.
Senior Carolyn Pitman won her 100th career doubles competition in the latter match, becoming just the second player in academy history to do so. Her career doubles record now stands at 100-28 and an impressive 68-11 in the spring. She joins Marissa Limsiaco in the 100-win club. Limsiaco holds the school-record with 114 career doubles win.
Army easily got by Siena in the morning with a 4-0 victory. The Cadets swept the doubles matches while conceding only four games. Pitman, freshman Kirby Einck, and junior Nancy Porter each opened singles play with wins to clinch the decision for Army. The match was then called due to the number of scheduled matches at Lichtenberg Center today. Pitman also won her singles match, the 68th win of her career on that side. She is now tied for ninth all-time on the women's side with Amanda Paluch.
The landmark win for Pitman fit the theme of the day for the team as her and fellow senior Haley O'Connor won in shutout fashion 6-0 against Rhode Island's duo of Ariel Haber and Elizaveta Sadovnikova. Pitman appropriately served to close out the match.
The singles matches against the Rams featured a number of tight battles that went into a third set. Freshman Genevieve McCormick topped Anna Peacock in the second singles flight for a 7-6, 4-6, 10-5 win. Fellow freshman Sera Martorelli earned a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 conquest over Haber while O'Connor battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win against Jordan Rucks. Those last two matches took place in the fourth and fifth singles matches, respectively.
Freshman Arianna Spirtos returned to the Black Knights lineup and earned her first career dual match victory. She topped Nicole Kalver 6-0, 6-0 in the number six singles position. It was Spirtos first action since January 29 against Sacred Heart.
Army now receives its first off-weekend since the season started. The Cadets will return to action with a Patriot League bout against Holy Cross on Thursday, March 24.
