Second-Half Drought Leads to Setback at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team trailed by two at halftime, but was unable to limit Lehigh's offense in the second half during a 14-6 setback in Patriot League action on Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Army falls to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in the league and Lehigh improves to 10-2 and 4-1.
Sophomore Rachel Hornick scored a pair of goals and added three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while freshman Nikki Polhamus also tacked on two goals. Freshman Izzy McMahon scored once and totaled a team-leading three draw controls and classmate Manuela Cortes also found the back of the net once. Junior Erin Jollota came away with two assists, while freshman Kayla Rowley made 10 saves, including three which came on free-position shots.
Lauren Beausoleil and Allison LaBeau each finished with hat tricks for Lehigh, while Beausoleil also caused six turnovers and collected five ground balls. Courtney Henig, Annie Pearson and Haley Wentzel all scored twice and Taylor Tvedt stopped four shots in net.
Lehigh took hold of the game early on, with four straight goals to begin the contest, including back-to-back strikes from Beausoleil.
Polhamus brought the Black Knights back to within three with a marker at the 17:34 point of the first half, but Henig converted a free-position shot 19 seconds later to extend the Mountain Hawks' margin back to four goals, 5-1.
Army responded with three unanswered goals during the next 5:50 to move back to within one. Hornick struck for her 20th tally of the year with 15:04 remaining in the first half before Cortes and Polhamus found netting just 13 seconds apart, with goals at the 11:37 and 11:24 marks, respectively.
Rowley registered two of her four first-half saves in the final 10:00 of the period, but LaBeau found a seam with 26 seconds before the halftime whistle to send the hosts into the break with a 6-4 advantage.
Lehigh got out of the gate early in the second half as Pearson scored just 11 seconds into the period to give her team a three-goal lead. Both sides swapped the next four goals, with Hornick and McMahon each scoring for Army, as Lehigh controlled a 9-6 lead with 19:38 remaining.
The Mountain Hawks put the game out of reach by tallying five consecutive goals in the game's last 18:28, including scoring contributions from four different players.
The Black Knights return to Michie Stadium for their final two home games of the year, beginning with a contest against American on Saturday, April 16 at 3:30 p.m.
