ROUND ONE RESULTS
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Army West Point golf team competed to a tied for fifth finish after the first two rounds of the Wofford Invitational.
"The team struggled a bit with the greens in the morning, but the guys fought back and played well this afternoon," said head coach Brian Watts. "Dean had a great day and his ball striking has been great. A few putts didn't fall for him in the first round, but he came back to finish with a 68."
The Black Knights have a four-under score of 572 after totaling 289-283 through 36 holes. Gardner-Webb leads the field at 12-under and is followed by USC Upstate (-10) and Wofford (-10)
Dean Sakata has paced the Cadets with 138 strokes. The sophomore totaled rounds of 71 and 68 to finish the day at five-under with two eagles and 10 birdies. Nine of those birdies come from the back nine. Sakata leads the field in five-par chances with an average score of 3.88.
Marcus Plunkett is the next-best finisher for Army with a three-under score of 71-70—141 to rank tied for 11th. He has also been strong on the back nine as he has carded six of his eight birdies in holes 10-18.
Justin Pagila is t-19th on the day after totaling 142 strokes. He notched an eagle on the fifth hole during the first round and also added seven birdies.
Matt Plunkett is tied for 63rd through 18-holes with two eagles on his scorecards to finish the day at seven-over. Nick Turner totaled 79-73—152 (+8) to rank t-68th at the tournament.
"Conditions were a little tough today," Watts said. "The greens were firmer and faster with the wind. We didn't make adjustments early enough and lost out of scoring opportunities. The team shot five-under par in the afternoon which I was proud of. We need to play more aggressively tomorrow, fire up more pins and get a few more putts to fall."
The Country Club of Spartanburg features a 2 par course that plays at 6,648 yards. The teams will play 36 holes Monday and another 18 on Tuesday. Both days will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
