Colgate Tops Women's Lacrosse on Senior Day
April 20, 2016 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team held a four-goal halftime advantage, but was unable to hold off a strong run by Colgate in the second half of a 16-7 Patriot League loss on Wednesday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Army slips to 5-10 overall and 0-7 in the league following the setback, while Colgate improves to 6-8 and 4-3.
Junior Erin Jollota posted her second hat trick of the year and added an assist for the Black Knights, while freshmen Kelsea Krauss and Izzy McMahon each contributed two goals.
Isabel Kreitler paced Colgate with three goals, while five others netted a pair of markers, including Haley O'Hanlon, who also tallied an assist and a game-high 13 draw controls.
Jollota scored less than two minutes into the game as the Black Knights seized an early 1-0 lead, but the Raiders found the back of the net 17 seconds later with a goal from O'Hanlon.
Army finished the opening half with four unanswered goals, beginning with back-to-back strikes from McMahon at the 23:43 and 19:13 marks. Krauss added a pair of goals in the final 18:20 of the half to send the hosts into the locker room with a 5-1 advantage.
Krauss bounced a free-position shot past Colgate goalie Asil Asfour with 18:20 on the clock and tallied a second marker with 12:09 left before halftime, when she threw a pass from behind the net that deflected off Asfour's stick and in.
Freshman Kayla Rowley made all four of her saves in the first period, including a stop on a shot by Kreitler with 11 seconds remaining in the frame.
The Raiders netted six of the first seven goals to start the second half before going on to score the game's last nine markers in the final 13:50.
"We've improved so much over the season," said head coach Kristen Waagbo. "We've been able to maximize what we have this year and that has been evident. We have struggled this season with putting together a complete game and today was definitely a tale of two halves. The best thing is that we have something to build on going forward. We started from scratch this year and we're going to be returning a lot of players for next season."
Army takes to the road for its final two games of the year, beginning with a contest at Boston University on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Army honored seniors Anna Smith and Leah Wasserman in a Senior Day ceremony following the game.
