Men’s Track and Field Second after First Day

Day One Results
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Army West Point men's track and field team had a strong first day at the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Black Knights rank second after six events with 38 points. They trail Navy who leads all with 83 points.
"Coming into a conference championship meet there is always a hope that all of our athletes will set personal records and outperform what they have done that season," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "The reality of our sport is that rarely happens. There are so many moving parts that you almost always have the good outcomes and the bad. So at this meet, we have had more of the good things happen and we are well positioned for tomorrow on both the men's and women's side."
The grouping in the 4x800 Meter Relay placed first with a time of 7:31.53. Junior Jack Monday, freshman Ben Boswell, sophomore Nickolas Causey, and senior Mitch Dutton were the quartet who led the Black Knights to victory. The decision by Smith and his coaches to run Dutton as the anchor worked out well.
"Mitch is a championship racer," said Smith. "He wins when it counts. We put him on the anchor for precisely that reason and our strategy paid off.
This was the first group to win the 4x800 Meter Relay at the Patriot League Championships for Smith. The previous three all finished as runner-ups.
Sophomore Lee Bares retained his crown in the Pole Vault. After winning in the event at the Indoor Championships, Bares reached 5.10 meters today to claim first.
Freshman Ben Sims paced the 100 meter dash group in the preliminaries with a sensational time of 10.43. He will be looking to add another victory for the Cadets in the finals on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Senior Taylor Andrews ran the fastest in the 110 Meter Hurdles (14.51) preliminaries and will also be in contention for a title. The finals will take place tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Junior Matthew Bearden had a personal-best in the 10,000 meter run to open the day. His run of 30:38.79 was good enough for fifth place. Fellow classmate Matt Cushing added a fourth-place finish in the Javelin Throw with a new personal-best of over two meters at 60.16 meters.
