Army Solid Against Navy Despite 1-0 Loss

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point women's soccer team battled Navy here Friday night in the teams' always thrilling rivalry game.

A Mids tally just eight minutes into the contest proved decisive though as Navy defeated Army 1-0. With the win, the Mids increased their lead on the all-time series to 14-11-3.

In Friday's back-and-forth affair, Army had numerous chances on frame but weren't able to sneak one past Navy's keeper Dayton Wetherby, who finished with a game-high five saves.

Clare Shea led Army's charge with four shots, three of which were on frame. One of Shea's shots on goal came just seconds after Navy had scored, giving the more than 2,000 fans in attendance a little preview as to how the rest of the match would play out.

The two teams then continued to test each other throughout the remainder of the contest but both goalies were impressive between the posts.

Jordan Cassalia registered four stops in the game, pushing her season mark to 42.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

Navy held the slight edge on shots at 10-9, while both teams recorded five shots on target.
The Black Knights finished with six corner kicks to the Mids' one.
Nicole Bautista added two shots of her own, while three other Cadets notched one each in Sam Sullenger, Madison McGinn, and Lauren McGovern.
In the 63rd minute, Shea was again knocking on the door when she tried to redirect a Sydney Witham corner kick with a brilliant header. Wetherby was just able to get her hands on the shot to make the save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Bautista nearly put Army in front seven minutes into the contest when McGinn played her a great ball to the top of the 18-yard box. The rookie took one touch before launching a well-driven shot on frame. Unfortunately, her attempted grazed the top of the crossbar and fell out of play.
On the ensuing play, Wetherby sent a long goal kick to the foot of Anabell Motley on the right wing. The sophomore then played catch with Clare MacAdam, finding herself back with the ball at the top of the box. Motley one-timed a shot that dipped just inside the crossbar and past the outstretched hands of Cassalia.
