THE DETAILS
- Army and Navy go head-to-head for the 87th time Saturday. A Star is on the line for the annual Star Series presented by USAA.
- The Black Knights boast a 48-36-2 advantage in the all-time series which dates back to 1936. The Midshipmen captured last year's bragging rights by a 419.300-413.750 margin in Annapolis. The last time the meet was held at West Point, the Cadets came out victorious (414.550-412.600).
- Army and Navy faced each other at the West Point Open during the opening weekend of the 2017 gymnastics season. The Black Knights placed third and edged the fifth-place Mids, 393.550-391.250.
- Since the WPO, Army has faced some tough competition in No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Air Force, both meets on the road. Navy won its own invitational with 397.650 points and defeated ECAC opponent William & Mary (409.400-401.300).
- The Black Knights have seen most of their success on the vault and high bar apparatuses. Army is undefeated on vault this season with best scores against both the Nittany Lions and Falcons. Ryan Wilson has excelled in the event and has not scored under a 14.100. Last weekend on high bar, Leo Genders championed the event with a 14.000 showing.
THE SERIES
- The series has seen ebbs and flows throughout the decades. Army jumped out to an early advantage in the 1930s, posting a 2-1-1 record in the teams' first four meetings.
- Navy evened things out in the 40s as the teams split the series 5-5, but the 50s swung in the Black Knights' favor as they earned a 9-0-1 mark. Army dominated again in the 60s, posting a nearly unblemished record of 9-1-0 and followed up with a mark of 6-4-0 in the 70s.
- Under head coaches Ned Crossley and Larry Butler in the 1980s, Navy claimed its first advantage going 8-2-0 over the Black Knights.
- The series has been rather even of late, with Navy taking a 5-6-0 advantage in the 90s and a 6-7-0 mark from 2000-09.
THE LAST MEETING
- The Army West Point men's gymnastics team jumped out to a an early advantage, but a strong showing on still rings put No. 12 Navy in the lead in handing the No. 13 Black Knights a 419.3-413.75 defeat at Macdonough Hall.
- Army outpointed Navy (69.65-69.25) on floor exercise and on high bar (71.6-69.0). The Midshipmen compiled the top team scores on pommel horse (68.0-68.3), still rings (70.65-66.45), vault (72.5-71.5) and parallel bars (66.55). Navy had four individual winners, to include all-around, with another sharing medalist honors with Army.
- Four Black Knights finished among the top seven on floor exercise and two were among the top three on pommel horse but Navy's sweep of the top five places on still rings and five of the seven on vault proved to be the turning point of the meet.
