Army Claims 3-0 Win Over Seawolves
August 28, 2017 | Men's Soccer
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team erupted for three goals en route to a 3-0 shutout victory over Stony Brook on the road on Monday night.
Three different Cadets scored for the Black Knights in a dominating effort to help push the Black Knights to 2-0, while Stony Brook fell to 1-1. Army dominated on both sides of the field, outshooting the Seawolves 15-11, while Justin Stoll and the defense allowed just two shots on goal, both coming in the first half.
"It was a very difficult place to play," said Army West Point head coach Russel Payne. "I am so very proud of the road win and performance from our group and it looks like the guys are very focused on whats inside the lines and not worried about things we can't control. Overall, I am very proud of them."

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army moves to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2013.
- The three goals were the most scored by the Black Knights in a game since a 4-1 win over Lehigh on Oct. 8, 2016.
- Freshman Christian Takaki dished out his first career assist in the win over the Seawolves.
- Senior Shaban Abousaud and sophomore Keenan O'Shea netted their first goals of the season, while Rex Epps tallied his second.
- Epps has now scored in back-to-back games for the fourth time in his career.
- Army put 11 of its 15 shots on goal.
- The Black Knights last posted two consecutive shutouts when they blanked both Navy (Sept. 23) and Sacred Heart (Sept. 27) 1-0 last season.
- Army has not allowed a goal in 190 minutes of action this year.
- The Black Knights' defense did not allow a shot on goal in the entire second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the ninth minute, Takaki dribbled the ball down the right side and inserted it into the box, where Abousaud took control and rifled a shot into the back of the net to give Army the early advantage.
- After a solid defense showing in the first half, the Black Knights switched gears in the second stanza and aggressively went on the attack, scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes of the half.
- Epps took aim at the net in the 52nd minute and after it was saved, it bounced over to O'Shea, who tapped it in to extend the lead to two.
- Less than a minute later, O'Shea returned the favor after he dribbled the ball up the middle of the field and found Epps for another insurance goal.
- Army would go on to put four more shots on goal the rest of the way, but all were denied by the Seawolves' keeper.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights return to West Point for a Friday afternoon showdown with Fairfield slated for 12:30 p.m. at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.
