Army Splits Season Opening Tri-Match
October 13, 2018 | Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point rifle team opened its season on Saturday, splitting it's tri-match with Memphis and Ole Miss.
"It's good to get the season opener out of the way," head coach Web Wright said. "We have been working hard and we can see the benefits, particularly in air rifle. We shot up near the program record today with Benjamin Davis leading the team with his own personal record of 594."
Army finished with the top score in air rifle, beating both Memphis and Ole Miss in this discipline with a score of 2359.
"There were some decent moments in smallbore, but we still need some work," Wright said. "Payne Nunn shot well. He had the high score of the match."
Nunn's 583 score topped the leaderboards, giving him a team high aggregate of 1170, just one point shy of Ole Miss' Jillian Zakrzeski for the day's high score.
"We will hit it hard again tomorrow for the second match against Ole Miss," Wright said. "This one counts for the conference record, so I'm looking for the team to turn up the heat a little more."
