Army Defeats Conference Foe Ole Miss
October 14, 2018 | Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point rifle team closed out its opening weekend with a victory over conference opponent Ole Miss on Sunday.
The Black Knights outscored the Rebels in both disciplines, finishing with an aggregate advantage of 4656-4649.
"This win feels pretty good," head coach Web Wright said. "Ole Miss got us by a point last year, so this victory is all the more special."
Sophomore co-captain Clayton Hanson led the way for the Cadets, topping the leaderboard in both smallbore (582) and air rifle, where he shot a personal best score of 594. This marks the second match in a row that a Black Knight set a personal high mark in the discipline, after sophomore Benjamin Davis shot a 594 on Saturday.
"Clayton really turned it on today," Wright said. "He tied for the high score in smallbore and had the high score and personal record in air rifle. It's good to see his hard work pay off."
The win gives the Black Knights a 2-0 record in GARC competition after the first weekend.
"Overall, I am pleased with our air rifle performance thus far," Wright said. "More work in three position is needed and we need to build more depth in the next couple of weeks."
Ahead for Army is a big match up with perennial power, West Virginia.
"The next match is WVU, my alma mater," Wright said. "I really want to show them our true potential."
