Nunn Sets Air Rifle Mark In Army Loss
November 10, 2018 | Rifle
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Army West Point rifle team was defeated by North Carolina State in their match at the University of Kentucky on Saturday.
"It's been a rough two days," Head Coach Web Wright said. "Scores were lower than expected. Certainly not where we need to be."
The Black Knights outscored the Wolfpack in air rifle, but it was not enough to overcome their deficit from smallbore, as North Carolina state won with an aggregate advantage of 4649 to 4634. Army senior co-captain Payne Nunn was the team's top performer, shooting a program record score of 597 in air rifle.
"The bright spot was Payne's air rifle score today," Wright said. "His 597 is the highest score a cadet has ever shot in competition. He has reached this mark a couple times in practice, so it's good to see him punch through the mental barrier and make it happen."
Army will look to rebound on Sunday, when they face the defending national champion Kentucky Wildcats.
"We are going to explore Lexington this afternoon, have a decent dinner, rest up and hit it tomorrow against the reigning NCAA champions"
