BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – The Army West Point men's golf team saw senior captain Dean Sakata finish the day's best golfer in a head-to-head with Florida Atlantic here Monday.
Sakata notched a score of 70 during the one round, 18-hole competition to finish 1-under par at the beautiful Delray Dunes. The Diamond Bar, Calif., native averaged even on the Par 3's and Par 4's, while playing 1-under on the Par 5's.Â
Despite Sakata's strong performance, the Black Knights ultimately fell to their hosts 293 (+9) - 302 (+18). The teams treated the day like a normal tournament playing five guys, counting only the top four scores. The Cadets selected Sakata, Nick Turner, James McKee, Gunnar Doyle and Justin Williamson as their top group before the start of the day.
Doyle shot a 4-over par to finish at 75 and earn Army's second best finish. The Black Knights' next golfer that had his score count toward the final total was McKee, who fired a 78 (+7). Closing out the Cadets' top four count was Williamson who carded a 79 (+8).Â
Turner finished at nine-over par with a score of 80.Â
Joseph Gerardi, Matt Plunkett, Sam McGee, Max Messner and Will Bagley all played as individuals for Army.
For the non-counting scores, Gerardi signed his card with a score of 78 (+7), while Plunkett, McGee, Messner, and Bagley closed out their day with scores of 80 (+9), 82 (+11), 82 (+11), and 104 (+33), respectively.Â
Florida Atlantic took four of the top five finishes with Ricky Hendler placing second after going even on the day. Cody Christensen and Chris Thomas carded a 2-over par of 74, while Sully Zagerman's 76 (+5) closed out the Owls' top counting scorers.Â
Next up for the Black Knights is the two-day Loyola Intercollegiate in Phoenix, Ariz., which runs from Feb. 25-26.
