Army Offense Stalls Late at Mount St. Mary’s
February 24, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-10 decision at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
After scoring seven early goals, the Black Knights managed just three in the final 47 minutes of the game. That frenzy started with four in the first 2:50 of the contest from Jackie Brattan, Maddie Miller, Amy Johnston and Megan Raftery.
From there, the two sides alternated scores over the next seven goals to send Army to a 7-3 lead. The home side countered with a 6-0 run to close out the first half, however, including four goals to finish out the opening period.
Johnston netted her second of the game to stop the bleeding and cut the Mountaineers' lead to 9-8. The two teams once again traded goals as Army trailed 11-10 with 15:05 remaining, but that would be as close as the Black Knights would get to retaking the lead. A natural hat trick from Taylor Carhart in the final six minutes of the game that included a pair of man-up goals to ice the game for Mount St. Mary's.
Miller, Johnston, and Brattan all scored multiple goals in the contest with seven different players finding the back of the net. Miller and Rachel Hornick led the Black Knights with three points apiece and were the only Cadets with a goal and an assist in the game.
Defensively, Lauren Bredenburg and Hannah Slomkowski collected a game-high four ground balls. Bredenburg's four caused turnovers were also a game high.

WHAT'S THE WORD?
- Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kristen Skiera – "Overall, it was a disappointing outing for us today. We had a hot start to the game, but were unable to control the draw and remain poised under pressure for the remaining 55 minutes of the game. Our fouls, rushed possessions and ineffectiveness to win the 50/50 battle really hurt our ability to get the momentum back in our favor. Moving forward, we have to become a much more poised and resilient team."
- Sr. Attack Amy Johnston – "We came out of the gate hot with a 4-0 lead, and unfortunately we had a few lolls that allowed Mount St. Mary's to tie it up going into the second half. Overall, we struggled to establish and maintain momentum throughout the game. We generated a lot of looks at the cage, but had a difficult time converting them into scoring opportunities."
- Fr. Defense Lauren Bredenburg – "We played hard defensively. We had a few big stops, but, unfortunately, we just weren't able to string them together. We were fortunate to have one of our plebe goalies setp in and help keep our defense together by coming up with some clutch saves to keep us in the game."
