Davis Advances on All-Around in NCAA Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Â In its first trip to the NCAA Championships since 2015, the Army West Point gymnastics team claimed a sixth-place finish in the qualifying round with total marks of 383.855. Mathew Davis placed second in the all-around and will compete in the NCAA Championship finals on Saturday night.
The Black Knights' top events of the night were floor exercise (68.065), still rings (67.065) and vault (68.631).
Davis was the runner-up in all-around in the qualifying round with a 79.297. The score advanced him to Saturday's all-around finals. He trailed Iowa's Bennet Huang (80.365) by 1.068 points.Â
Erik Del Cid finished 12th in both of his events tonight, including the floor exercise and vault. Graham Shaw secured a 12th-place finish on vault after turning in a 13.966.Â

COMPETITION
- Martin led the way on pommel to get the day started for the Black Knights with a 12.566.
- Davis finished closely behind his teammate with a 12.333.
- Davis and Casanova posted identical team-leading scores of 13.633.
- Herman was also impressive on the rings, posting a 13.366 score.
- Army compiled its best team score on vault, putting up an impressive 68.631.
- Del Cid's 14.333 was the fifth highest overall score on the day and was Army's only +14 score of the day.
- Shaw finished second on vault, putting up a 13.966, while Rex Scott's 13.466 was just shy of his career-high mark.Â
- Davis had arguably his best performance of the day on parallel bars, posting a top ten and career best score of 13.466
- Davis was tops in high bar as well, as his 12.866 put him in all-around contention heading into the final rotation.
- Del Cid had an impressive floor performance, leading the team with a 13.833 score.
- Herman was Army's second-best competitor after turning out a 13.666 mark. Casanova and Davis tied for third with even 13.533 scores.
- As a team, the Black Knights' top event was floor exercise. The team posted a strong 68.065 mark in their final rotation of the night.Â
