Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at Columbia
September 13, 2019 | Men's Soccer
NEW YORK – In its first true road test of the year, the Army West Point men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Columbia on Friday night.
The Black Knights (1-1-1) earned their first tie of the season, while the Lions (0-1-2) recorded their second. Columbia won the battle in shots (15-9) and corners (9-4), but the Army defense held its ground to prevent the Ivy League foe from grabbing a second score.
"I thought we showed some real good quality in our ability to adapt throughout the game," head coach Russell Payne said. "There were a few things that we let ourselves down with, but I thought there were more positives than negatives in this game. I can't be more pleased with our guys effort and application of detail. We will turn our attention and focus on getting ready for Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday."
Justin Stoll played a key role in stopping the Lions as the senior goalkeeper came away with a season-best seven saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights controlled the ball near the Columbia goal in the 34th minute when a Christian Takaki pass was deflected by a Lions' defender. However, the ball bounced to Epitime and the rookie put it past a diving Columbia player to O'Shea, who ripped a shot off the crossbar that rattled into the net for the goal.
- In the 41st minute, Columbia's Beto Carillo dribbled the ball at the top of the box and dished it over to Uri Zeitz. After getting a touch on the ball, Zietz sent it into the box past a swarm of Army defenders, but John Denis came charging in and sent a shot into the back of the net to even the score.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights will return to Malek Stadium at Clinton Field on Tuesday to face off against Mount St. Mary's for a match slated for 6 p.m.
