WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team dropped their first contest of the year to conference opponent Binghamton University on Saturday afternoon, 23-10. The Black Knights found themselves at a deficit early, unable to gain enough of a momentum to move past the Bearcats.
Army saw defeat in the first three bouts however, Corey Shie turned things around for the Black Knights at 149lbs. The junior went head-to-head with Michael Zarif (Binghamton), holding him to a 1-1 tie through three periods. In the first sudden death overtime, Shie was able to power past Zarif for two points, and Army's first points of the day.
Markus Hartman kept the ball rolling at 157lbs to follow, holding a lead through the entire bout and taking an easy 8-1 decision over Chris Barker. Hartman's victory allowed Army to move within three of Binghamton at the halfway point.
Despite some tough calls in the 165lb-184lb slots, seasoned 197lb competitor J.T. Brown grabbed the final victory for the Black Knights. Brown and Cory Day battled for points through much of the match, however big points for Brown in the third period allowed him to secure a 9-3 decision to close things out.
Lane Peters (141) and Owen Brown (165) had impressive outings against the Bearcats in the two extra matches, adding a fall by Peters at the 2:20 mark and a 12-3 major decision victory from Brown.

Coach Ward's Thoughts:
"That was just not a performance we can be proud of. I'm embarrassed to be honest; embarrassed for our fans and embarrassed for our program. Binghamton has a good team and I give them credit, but the way we dropped some matches today is just unacceptable. There has to be some accountability there, and that's on me, but we can't afford to have matches where we don't out fight our opponents. Today we were in some tough matches and we didn't get tough enough. We have plenty of chances to win nine of those bouts today and just didn't go and take them. This is something that stings and should be something that can make us better."
Up Next: Army will welcome Bucknell University to West Point for their second to last home contest of the year next week. The Black Knights and the Bison will square off Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. in Gillis Field House.
