WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Army West Point women's soccer team's unbeaten streak in Patriot League play came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the team fell 1-0 at American.
Through 90 minutes of action, just three shots on-frame were taken between the two sides as this was one of the Cadets' most evenly-matched games this season.
The opening whistle was followed by lots of back-and-forth between the Black Knights and the Eagles, with neither side able to fully possess the ball. Dara Murray had one of Army's best first-half chances when she tried to use a free kick to score, but she was unable to cash in on the opportunity.
Each team's back line held the other in check through the opening 45 minutes and though the game was scoreless at the half, Army held a 4-3 advantage in shots.
The game was relatively quiet coming out of the break, as it took a few minutes for any players to break the defensive lines. The Cadets earned a corner kick 10 minutes after the start of the second half, but came away empty. Following the set piece, Army continued to create chances. Lauren Drysdale got in on the action around the 67-minute mark with a shot from the top of the box, but her ball went just over the net.
Minutes after Drysdale's look, American took the lead by curling a ball into the back post. The goal, which was scored using a tricky angle, handed the home team a 1-0 lead. Emma Richey tried to answer the push when she got her head on a ball from Dara Murray and though she was able to get higher than a pair of Eagle defenders, her shot was off-target.
In the final minutes of action, American tried to score again but the Black Knights' back line helped clear the ball out to keep the margin at 1-0.
