WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point women's soccer Head Coach Tracy Chao has announced the hiring of Emily Abshire Chiu as the program's new Director of Soccer Operations. She brings a diverse background in coaching, education, and team administration to the Black Knights' soccer staff. Chiu joins the program with more than ten years of experience across collegiate, high school, and youth soccer, along with a strong foundation in logistics, athlete development, and operational leadership.
Chiu's career spans multiple levels of the sport, beginning with her early work as a student manager for Texas A&M University Soccer. In that role, she supported equipment operations, inventory systems, and home-game logistics for a nationally competitive SEC program. She later expanded her operational and instructional experience through positions with Aggie Soccer Camps, Hot Shots Soccer, and the TAMU Letterman's Association, gaining exposure to event coordination, customer engagement, and program support.
Most recently, Chiu served as a physical education teacher at Roth Elementary in Klein, Texas. She designed and implemented developmentally appropriate physical education and health curricula for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Her work emphasized differentiated instruction, classroom management, and relationship-building, all of which directly support the daily needs of cadet-athletes in a Division I environment.
Chiu's coaching background includes roles across club, high school, and youth soccer. She coached with Liberty Point Soccer Club in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she developed young athletes, built team culture, and strengthened parent and community relationships. Prior to that, she served as the head coach of Kenwood High School Girls Soccer in Clarksville, Tennessee. She oversaw all aspects of the program, including practice planning, academic monitoring, budget management, equipment purchasing, fundraising coordination, and game-day operations. Her leadership earned her recognition as the TSSAA District 12-AA Coach of the Year for the 2018–19 season.
In addition to her coaching and educational experience, Chiu has been deeply involved in the military community. She has served in multiple Soldier and Family Readiness Group leadership roles, including SFRG Coordinator for 2BCT, 37th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Bragg, and Treasurer and Volunteer for 3BCT, 21st Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Campbell. Her service earned her recognition as Volunteer of the Month in September 2018. Her familiarity with military culture and family support structures aligns closely with the mission and values of the United States Military Academy.
Chiu holds a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a specialization in Coaching from Texas Woman's University and a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from Texas A&M University, where she also completed minors in Business Administration and Tourism Resource Management. She is certified in Texas to teach Physical Education (EC–12) and Core Subjects with STR (EC–6). She also holds USSF D, E, and F coaching licenses and previously served as a USSF Grade 8 Referee.
As Director of Soccer Operations, Chiu will oversee the logistical and administrative functions of the Army West Point Soccer program. Her responsibilities will include team travel, scheduling support, equipment management, operational planning, and day-to-day program coordination. Her background in coaching, education, and military-connected service positions her to play a key role in supporting the program's infrastructure and enhancing the overall experience of its cadet-athletes.
