BURLINGTON, Vt. – After 110 minutes of soccer, the Army West Point women's soccer team earned its first draw of the 2021 campaign, tying Vermont 0-0 at Virtue Field.
Despite nearly 40 shots being taken overall, neither side was able to get anything past the other team's keeper.
The first half of play saw limited action for the Black Knights, as the Catamounts came out aggressively and tested freshman keeper Sage Strohman twice within the opening 10 minutes. Dara Murray had the Cadets' first shot around the 20-minute mark, but her look was denied by Vermont's keeper.
Coming out of the halftime break, Vermont had the first few chances to score. Army earned the first corner kick of the night less than 10 minutes into the second stanza, but the team was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Neither team was able to possess the ball for about a 10-minute period following the set piece, until both Kaelan Bradley and Murray fired off shots on-frame for the Black Knights.
With less than five minutes to go in regulation, the Catamounts made two great runs at the net, but Strohman was a wall between the sticks and came up with a pair of highlight-reel stops to force the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Vermont earned a 3-0 advantage in shots. A foul within the final two minutes gave the Catamounts a solid chance to end the game, but the Cadets' back line cleared the ball to keep the contest alive.
The final 10 minutes of play were action-packed compared to the first overtime period, as Vermont took six shots and Army fired off four. Alyssa Carfagno provided a key boost off the bench and had a great look after threading a ball through a pair of Catamount defenders, but her shot went off the right post.

Inside the Box Score
- Bradley made her first career start. The rookie has appeared in each of the team's seven matches so far.
- In her third start between the posts, Strohman hauled in a career-high nine saves. It's the most made by any Black Knight so far this season.
- Army outshot Vermont 8-7 in the second half, though the Catamounts earned a 23-15 advantage overall.
- Both Murray and Drysdale led the team with four shots apiece. Bradley (2), Carfagno (2) Dani Mendoza (1), Emma Richey (1) and Grace Edvalds (1) also had chances.
- Each member of Army's back line (Richey, Lindsey Smith, Elizabeth Oberhaus and Gillian Schiffer) played the full duration of the match.
"Getting points on the road is never easy," head coach Tracy Chao said. "Really proud of this squad because their effort and attitudes continue to be top notch. Ultimately, we created a ton of chances inside the box and are getting good numbers as well which truly is a testament of the quality and fantastic work of our midfield. It's just a matter of time before the goals start coming. Sage had a fantastic game and our backline was outstanding in shutting down their counter attacks. But, we have a huge day of rest tomorrow and all eyes are on Air Force."
Cadets' Corner
"Even without getting the result I thought we dominated the game. We created very dangerous chances and I thought Vermont's keeper had a solid game. Everyone stepped up, especially Gill (Schiffer) who held it down for us in the back, playing center back when she usually plays midfield. I'm proud of all the girls and I think it was a good game for us to have ahead of our preparation for Air Force." - Sage Strohman
"There were a lot of positives we can look back and take away from this game and implement into our preparation for Air Force. We had great pressure in the second half both offensively and defensively and created dangerous chances in the box. We are looking forward to Thursday and for the opportunity to compete against another academy." - Kaelan Bradley
