Football Heads To Texas To Battle Rival Air Force
November 02, 2022 | Football
Army (3-4) travels to Arlington, TX to play step one in winning the Commander in Chief's Trophy, in the Lockheed Martin Commanders' Classic vs. rival Air Force (5-3) at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers.
Last year, Army defeated Air Force in overtime 21-14 in the first installment of the Commanders' Classic Game in Arlington. Despite Army's win the CIC Trophy was shared among the academies with Army retaining the Trophy, the first shared title since 1993.
Both Army and Air Force enter this game off bye weeks. Army's most recent game vs. ULM resulted in a 48-24 win at Michie Stadium on Oct. 22.
Army has won three of the last five CIC Trophy's ('17, '18, '20). Air Force's last CIC title came in 2016. The first CIC Trophy was awarded 50 years ago (1972) with Army winning the first Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually to the winning academy with the best record in the round-robin competition.
The Lockheed Martin Commanders' Classic between Air Force and Army in 2021 was the first college football game at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers. The deal for the game was a two-year contract (2021-22).
Globe Life Field is the home of Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers, which played 30 games in the park without fans in the abbreviated 2020 season. The facility then hosted 16 MLB neutral site postseason games in the National League Division (3) and Championship (7) Series and the World Series (6). Designed with a retractable roof to be a premier multipurpose sports and entertainment venue.
The Globe Life Field seating capacity for the Lockheed Martin Commanders' Classic is expected to approximate the 40,518 figure. The 1.8 million square foot facility includes sports lighting as well as broadcast locations that are specific to football.
