WEST POINT, N.Y. --- Army West Point Softball (17-25, 7-2) split a Wednesday doubleheader with Fordham (20-18, 8-5) dropping the first game 7-2 but bounced back in the second game to win 3-0 over the Rams.
Brook Mitchell led the Black Knights with a .600 batting average and one run. Kayla Edwards went 3-for-7 at the plate with two runs. Madi Gilmore and Jolie Duong each recorded two RBI for Army.
Game 1
The first game of the doubleheader had a slow start as neither team was able to score in the first two innings.
Army rattled off the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third for a 2-0 lead over Fordham. The frame started with a single by Edwards that was followed by a base hit off the bat of Leila Hurst. The two moved into scoring position off a wild pitch and were brought home by a base hit to center field off the bat of Gilmore. Army finished the frame with two runs of three hits and one error.
Emily Iannotti (6-3) tossed two strikeouts in the top of the fourth and caught a line out to keep Fordham off the board.
The Rams rallied off three runs off four hits in the top of the fifth, swiping the lead from the Black Knights. Though Hurst fired off a standup triple in the bottom frame, Army was unable to answer the runs by Fordham.
Both teams were quiet in the sixth inning, but Fordham tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh extending its lead to 7-2.
Grace Snyder tried to rally the Black Knights in the bottom frame by drawing a walk. Edwards followed with a single to move her and Snyder into scoring position. Unfortunately, Army came up short at the plate and fell 7-2 to Fordham.
Game 2
The second game started the same as the first game, each team scoreless through two innings. Army, again, was the first team to put runs on the board in the bottom of the third.
Mitchell fired off a single up the middle to get a runner on base for the Cadets. The next two runners reach base due to errors by the Rams to load the bases. With three on and two out, Duong ripped a two RBI single up the middle giving Army the 2-0 lead. Julia Farris helped plate one more run for the Black Knights with a single to left field. Army finished the frame with three runs on three hits and two errors.
Duong (9-8) was dealing in the circle for the Black Knights. She retired 10 straight batters from the top of the fourth to the top of the seventh. She recorded five strikeouts and only allowed five hits in her seven innings of work. The Firstie picked up her fifth shutout of the season.
Army was able to keep Fordham off the board with help from the shortstop, Lauren Little, who had a tremendous game in the field for the Cadets. She recorded the final out of the game off a beautiful grounded out.
