Mens Soccer Comes To A 1-1 Draw With Lehigh
October 07, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Bethlehem, PA – The Army West Point Black Knights men's soccer team ended their match against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in a 1-1 draw.
How it Happened
The action started quickly as the first goal came just 15 minutes in off a penalty kick by Lehigh junior forward Perry Kingson.
Army put together great offensive pressure shortly following the goal, getting an exceptional scoring chance from sophomore midfielder Jack Meyer as his shot just missed, hitting the post.
Immediately after Gage Lyons, the freshman out of D.C. had a great look, as he sent the ball just barely over the crossbar as the game entered the 20th minute.
The Black Knights would keep pestering offensively throughout the first half with another clean scoring opportunity coming from senior captain Nick Atkinson as his shot forced the Mountain Hawks to make a goal line clear with the rebound coming back to Eric Lusskin as he headed it less than a foot over the crossbar.
Army picked up right where they left off entering the second half. Senior captain Cooper Warren would get a chance to tie the game in the 50th minute but sent it just wide.
Lyons got another look in the 72nd minute that required Lehigh to make yet another goal-line save. Lyons wouldn't wait long though to get on in the back of the net as he scored in the 77th minute to tie the game at one.
Goalkeeper Harrison Faulker would go on to make three incredible saves in the closing minutes of the game to keep the game at a tie.
The Black Knights would get one last look in the last two minutes of the game as Jubril Bamgbala sent a pass over to Drew Clement and he put it just wide of the net.
After the performance head coach Brian Plotkin had this to say about his squad: "A strong effort by the group tonight. We competed, we were connected, and we pushed until the very last minute. We were unable to find the winner but it's a performance to build on.
We are the only team that the Patriot League gave four of our first five league games on the road and five of our first six away from home and Malek Stadium and we are excited for the challenge of playing meaningful games. As players, and as a team, these are the moments we have been building, and developing for.
We have a lot of experienced players in our locker room who have played meaningful games, and some youthful players who have gotten a lot of experience and we as a group know what it takes to be successful in the upcoming games over the next few weeks"
Army will have a big star matchup in their next game against Navy. They will travel to Subaru Park in Philadelphia on Friday, Oct. 13th at 6:00 PM.
