Strohman Leads The Way En Route to 0-0 Draw at UConn
August 31, 2023 | Women's Soccer
STORRS, Conn. – Behind an impressive performance from junior goalkeeper Sage Strohman the Army women's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw on Thursday night in Storrs, Conn.
"That's a great point on the road," Head Coach Tracy Chao said. "We've now played UConn the past two seasons, and the quality of their team that Coach Margaret has this season is dynamic throughout and dangerous. And for us, we couldn't be prouder of our ability to stay disciplined in our defensive principles and relentless in our moments of transition. Sage came up huge as well as Sydney Bender and the rest of our backline. But at the end of it, our players did their job. This is probably our toughest weekend and again another opportunity to continue to put us up against some top opponents. But it's a quick turnaround to get rest and recover but all eyes on Princeton now."
The first half was played almost entirely in UConn's final third but Strohman showed why she is one of the top keepers in the Patriot League. She faced four shots on frame and put a stop to all of them, including two from right in front of the net within a 30-second span.
The Black Knights managed just one shot in the first half and went without a shot on goal. Army's backline was able to hold strong through wave upon wave of UConn attacks.
The second half was much of the same as the Huskies would put up 13 more shots including three more on goal. The UConn pressure persisted but so did the Stro Show. The junior stopped all three shots she faced in the second half to bring her final total to seven to set a new season high.
"Today was a hard-fought battle and a massive point on the road." Strohman said. "I did my job and came up with a few saves, but all the love goes to the rest of the team who defended tough the whole 90 minutes. They make my life easier and prevent so many shots from even coming my way. Major shout out to Sydney Bender who played absolutely phenomenal, it would've been a different game without her in there. Excited to learn from this game and move on to the next!"
The Black Knights were held without a shot on goal for the first time since Apr. 9, 2021 when they fell 1-0 to Colgate. It is the first time in program history that Army was held without a shot on goal and still earned a draw.
Next up, Army remains on the road to face off with Princeton on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 6 PM on ESPN+.
