Army Falls to Lafayette
September 27, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Easton, PA – The Army West Point Black Knights men's soccer team fell to the Lafayette Leopards by a score of 1-0 Wednesday night.
How it Happened
Army looked to score early having two shots on goal through the first twenty minutes, both belonging to freshman forward Jubril Bamgbala. Bamgbala had the first scoring chance in the 8th minute, and the second attempt followed shortly after in the 18th minute.
The first and only goal of the game came in the 24th minute for Lafayette off a corner kick. Senior forward Hale Lombard put one in the back of the net assisted by fellow senior Benji Grossi.
Black Knight's keeper Harrison Faulker came up with a big save in the 37th minute on Jonathan Klein to keep the Crusader lead to one. The sophomore was sharp to keep Army in it through all 90 minutes.
The second half picked up steam and saw three total yellow cards handed out, one to Army senior D'Anthony Brown and two going to junior Lawrence Aydlett of Lafayette, leaving the Leopards to finish the game with ten men with just under four minutes to play. Army had great looks to end the game but were unable to get the tying goal.
Reflecting on this game and looking on to the next, head coach Brian Plotkin said "I have a lot of belief in this group. They just need to start to show the belief in each other. We kept a good Lafayette team to just two shots on goal over 90 minutes and created the best chances of the game. Ultimately though the game is won in the boxes and they made a play, we didn't. We will be ready on Saturday to compete again against Loyola."
Army will be on the road again for their next match as they take on Loyola on Saturday, September 30th at 12:00 PM.
