Zhai’s Penalty Pushes Men’s Soccer Past Princeton
October 15, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – Army West Point Men's Soccer trailed Princeton in numerous statistical categories Tuesday night at Roberts Stadium.
But the Black Knights led in goals.
Ronald Zhai scored on a 70' penalty kick in what was the only goal either side could muster.
The penalty was drawn after an Army corner kick deflection off Zhai's foot resulted in a handball inside the six-yard box.
Army won its second consecutive match—after winning Army-Navy Cup XIII last week—in spite of being outshot 21-6, losing the shot on target battle 7-2, and conceding 11 corners while winning just three.
But the Black Knights posted their second shutout of the season and their first 1-0 winning decision of 2024.
Sophomore defender Daniel Gormley made his season debut in the waning moments, Niko Kapustin started the second half and played a career-high 19 minutes, and Jacob Lee contributed 64 high-energy minutes off the bench.
As it stands Tuesday, the victory qualifies as a Quad I win, with Princeton sitting at No. 50 in the live RPI.
