WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite suffering its first loss of the season, the Army West Point Rifle Team set a pair of program records posting a 2337 smallbore and 4710 aggregate in a match against Georgia Southern today at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
The Eagles (3-2), ranked fifth in the preseason Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) preseason poll, outshot the Black Knights (2-1) 4734-4710.
Army freshman Brenna Green led the way for the third time this season earning runner-up honors in smallbore with a 590, just two off medalist Tori Watts of Georgia Southern, along with finishing third in the aggregate scoring behind an 1183. Both are season highs along with a 593 mark in air rifle, second highest Army score in that discipline.
Junior Chris Jennings authored the Black Knights' top air rifle score firing a 594, tying with three others for the fourth highest mark in that event before settling for seventh place based on center shots (46). He turned in Army's second highest aggregate score behind a personal best 1178 (584 smallbore and 594 air rifle) to place sixth. Senior Briggs Moore followed with an 1176 as three Black Knights placed among the top seven.
Moore fired Army's third highest smallbore score (season best 583) of the match followed by freshman Addison Antwiler's 580, who set season marks for aggregate (1173) and air rifle (593).
"I am so proud of how the team performed today," said head coach Leighton Dempster. "We fought hard against a top-ranked team and came out with two program records. Breaking 4700 has been a long time coming for the Cadets and it was great to see it all come together.
"The majority of the team didn't shoot stellar today, so it will be exciting to see the progress moving forward from here. Once again, I am so proud of the plebes. They handled the match pressure well and are really stepping up to the plate."
Army's next competition is the President's Trophy Match against Air Force and Navy November 3rd.
