November 10, 2024 | Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshmen Addison Antwiler and Brenna Green turned in Army West Point rifle team's top marks, but it wasn't enough at the Black Knights suffered a 4752-4678 defeat to No. 3 West Virginia in their conference opener Saturday at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
The defending Great America Rifle Conference Mountaineers improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the GARC. The No. 16 Black Knights (2-3), who posted their second highest team score in the match, slipped under .500. The victory extended West Virginia's regular season win streak to 19 straight matches.
Green and Antwiler each placed sixth in their respective disciples in smallbore and air rifle respectively. Green fired a 585 smallbore score, to include 33 centers, just five points off runner-up and four away from third. Antwiler's season high 596 with 49 centers, was just one off the third highest score in that discipline.
Senior Briggs Moore was Army's aggregate leader with a mark of 1175 (584 smallbore and 591 air rifle) placing seventh in that leaderboard. Antwiler and Green were ninth (1170) and tenth (1164), respectively.
Moore's 584 in smallbore earned him seventh place with sophomore Ashton Arlington besting plebe Barbara Forgues for the tenth sport on 34 centers as both fired 577s.
In air rifle, Moore grabbed the 10th spot with a 591 followed by junior Chris Jennings who earned 11th after besting freshman Nicholas Bull as each fired a 587.
Bull and Forgues both set personal bests in aggregate with 1163 and 1161 scores, respectively.
"It was good to see some forward progress today after our last match," commented Army head coach Leighton Dempster. "Once again, the underclassmen did a great job handing themselves and performing in match conditions.
"Both disciplines were led by Plebes. Brenna led the team in smallbore with a 585 and Addison fired a personal best and team-high for the season in air rifle with a 596. We are moving in the right direction and will continue to work the fundamentals heading into next weekend."
Army closes out its fall slate with a pair of GARC matches in Lexington, Ky., where it takes on rivals Kentucky and Memphis Nov. 16 and 17th, respectively.
