February 03, 2024 | Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point rifle team tied the academy record in smallbore (2335) and set a program aggregate (4697) record in the NCAA scoring format, but it wasn't enough in a 5896-5863 loss to Navy (using the Academy five-man scoring format) in the annual Star match Saturday at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center presented by USAA.
The No. 13 Mids, who are members of the GARC along with the No. 14 Black Knights, posted their first conference win outpointing their host 4723-4697 in the NCAA scoring format. The Mids, who swept both disciplines, are 6-9 overall and 1-5 in the GARC, while Army is 2-4 conference and 6-5 overall.
Army's Kyle Kutz (third), Anusha Pakkam and Briggs Moore broke into the top six in smallbore with a 586 and identical 584s, respectively. Navy claimed the winner and runner-up along with placing four among the seven leaders in edging the Black Knights by seven points, 2342-2335, in the team scoring.
Army's 2335 smallbore score tied the school record, which it set last week against conference rival Ole Miss. Rounding out the rest of the Black Knights' leaders, claiming the ninth through 11th spots, were Chris Jennings (581), Claudia Sigel (580) and Ashton Arlington (578).
Holding a slim lead after smallbore, Navy stretched its advantage in air rifle by sweeping the top four spots en route to outscoring Army on the leaderboard, 2381-2362, to post its third straight win in the series.
Pakkam, Moore and Kutz recorded Army's top marks of 593, 591 and 589 in grabbing the fifth through and seventh spots. respectively. Jennings recorded a 589 to place 10th with Arlington and Ashton O'Connell recording identical 586.
In the aggregate scoring, Navy's Marleigh Duncan, the top shooter in smallbore (589) and third highest in air (595), was the medalist with an 1184. Pakkam was Army's leader with an 1177 followed by Kutz and Moore with 1175s in placing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
Army's 4697 program aggregate record in the NCAA format nipped its previous score by a point set last week against Ole Miss.
"Both teams did great today," stated second-year Army coach Leighton Dempster. "To have all counters in smallbore above 580 on both teams is something we've never done before, so it's encouraging to see the progress. "The Cadets did great against a record-setting Navy team and we were able to follow up last week's smallbore record with the same score today. Setting a new aggregate program record reinforces all the things we are doing right and gave us some insight as to what to improve before NCAA Qualifiers.
