Women's Lacrosse Downs Lafayette 17-4

WEST POINT, NY – Army West Point women's lacrosse (3-6, 1-1 Patriot League) collected its first conference victory with a 17-4 win over Lafayette (3-6, 0-2 Patriot League) from a rainy Michie Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The sophomore duo of Brigid Duffy and Allison Reilly continued to produce at a high level for the Black Knights, each amassing eight points in the contest as Duffy scored seven goals while Reilly netted a hat trick to go along with five assists. At least one of the duo either scored or assisted on 15 of Army's 17 goals in the game. Duffy added a game-high ten draw controls as Army won 15 of 25 for the game.
Army's defense and ride caused fits for the Leopards all afternoon, as Lafayette was just 16-29 in the clear while having 28 total turnovers. Madeline Lenkart led the effort with three caused turnovers and four ground balls while Sarah Chernik collected a game and career-high six ground balls. Reilly and Duffy played key roles as well, each causing three turnovers while tabbing multiple ground balls. Lindsey Serafine got the win in the cage with four saves on eight shots faced.
Army used a 12-0 run that stretched from the second to fourth quarter to pull away throughout the game, as the Black Knights outshot the Leopards 47-12 in total.
The Black Knights never trailed as Lily Valentini and Gabrielle Mirak got the scoring started early which saw a 2-0 lead midway through the opening frame. Lafayette was marred with turnovers in the early stages, but eventually scored with each of its first two shots on target to tie it at two after an Abby Romano goal with 86 seconds left in the frame. Duffy would ensure a lead was brought into the second quarter, with her eight-meter goal making it 3-2 through the opening 15 minutes.
Reilly would quickly make it 4-2 to begin the second, before assisting on the first career goal from Emma Grace Hepler to make it a three-goal game. Lafayette would get the next through Kendra Daly, before seeing a 34:39 stretch of game time without a goal. Reilly and Duffy would each add one more before the half, while Julia Gorajek deposited one on the woman-up advantage with an assist from Ryan Remaly which led to an 8-3 halftime lead for the home side. Lafayette was held to just one shot in the second quarter.
Neither team could find a breakthrough in the early stages of the second half, as Army turned the ball over five times itself in the third, despite eventually tabbing five more goals. Mirak got the scoring started with an assist from Duffy, as Duffy would then score three more in the quarter including a second from the eight-meter. Reilly notched her third assist of the game on a score from Remaly, which made it a 13-3 lead at going into the final quarter.
Reilly controlled the game in the fourth, scoring her third on a great unassisted tally cutting in from behind the net before setting up Duffy and Valentini for scores to bring her assist total to five. Duffy scored the final goal of the contest for Army with 7:09 left, securing the third seven-goal effort of her career. The Leopards were able to get one more past Serafine in the closing minutes, ending the extended 12-0 run and bringing the final score to 17-4.
Army will look to keep the momentum going with a midweek conference matchup at Boston University on Wednesday, with opening draw set for 4:00 p.m.
