Softball Takes Down Holy Cross in Five Innings to Secure Conference Series Sweep

WORCESTER, MASS. – The Army West Point softball team (8-25, 4-5 PL) secured their first Patriot League sweep of the season by defeating Holy Cross (7-19, 0-6 PL) in the final game of the series.
In the first inning, the Black Knights quickly got on the scoreboard. Ashton White drove in two runs with a single, bringing Parker Lantero and Kayla Edwards home.
Emma Murchinson followed suit in the same inning with an RBI single to right field, extending Army's lead to 3-0 and scoring Ashton White.
To cap off the inning, Mia Bonsignore earned her first RBI of the series with a single that brought Sophie Smith home.
Army's starting pitcher, Amanda Eaglin, held Holy Cross to just one hit in the bottom of the first, maintaining Army's 4-0 lead going into the top of the second.
Sophie Smith added another run for Army in the top of the second with a single to left center, scoring Kayla Edwards.
In the bottom of the second, Holy Cross scored an unearned run, reducing the deficit to 5-1. However, relief pitcher Breanna Izzo prevented further scoring for the remainder of the game.
In the top of the third, Mia Bonsignore hit her first career home run in her first at-bat of the game, extending Army's lead and maintaining momentum for the Black Knights.
Parker Lantero then singled to left field to notch another RBI and stretch the lead to 7-1.
Both Army and Holy Cross were held scoreless in the fourth inning, but Army's offense surged one final time in the fifth inning. Sophie Smith doubled for two RBIs, ending the game and securing the sweep for Army with a final score of 9-1.
Sophie Smith led the Black Knights in RBIs, collecting three on the day, while Mia Bonsignore had a flawless performance at the plate, going three-for-three with two RBIs and a home run.
Breanna Izzo earned her third win as pitcher, allowing zero runs, one walk, and only two hits in the game.
The Black Knights will be back in action at home on Wednesday, hosting Fordham at 4:00 PM.
