HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (15-4, 7-2 Patriot League) secured a hard-fought 65-60 victory over Colgate (15-7, 5-4 Patriot League), improving to an impressive 8-1 record on the road.
Leading the way for the Black Knights was Kya Smith, who delivered a career-high 22 points while shooting an outstanding 80% from the field. Trinity Hardy and Camryn Tade also posted double-digit performances, scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army won possession off the tip, but Colgate struck first. Reese Ericson quickly responded with a three-pointer, followed by a fast-break layup from Smith. The Raiders answered with back-to-back baskets, but the Black Knights countered with a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead. The teams continued to exchange baskets until Hardy and Fiona Hastick scored consecutive buckets in the final 1:30 of the first quarter, giving Army a 13-10 advantage.
In the second quarter, Colgate opened the scoring to trim the deficit to one, but Ericson knocked down a jumper in the paint, followed by Smith draining her first three-pointer of the season, extending Army's lead. The Black Knights maintained a multi-possession lead for most of the quarter, but Colgate fought back with back-to-back three-pointers in the final 1:11 to tie the game at 24-24. However, Smith converted an and-one layup with seven seconds left, restoring Army's lead. The Raiders responded with a last-second jumper, cutting Army's halftime advantage to 27-26.
Colgate came out strong in the second half, scoring consecutive baskets to take the lead. Hardy quickly responded by sinking two free throws to tie the game. Over the next two minutes, both teams traded points until Army put together a 5-0 run, fueled by Hardy's free throws and a Tade and-one. The Raiders battled back, taking advantage of a 7-1 run to regain the lead with three minutes left in the quarter. Colgate held a slim edge heading into the final period, as Army trailed 49-46.
The Black Knights opened the fourth quarter on fire, scoring five unanswered points to reclaim the lead. Army and Colgate continued to exchange baskets, but Army maintained a slight advantage. Midway through the quarter, Army led 56-54 before launching an 8-0 run, securing their largest lead of the game. Despite a late push from Colgate, including a pair of three-pointers, the Black Knights held firm to clinch a 65-60 victory.
