WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (16-4, 8-2 Patriot League) cruised past American (1-20, 1-9 Patriot League) with an 84-60 victory on Saturday. The Black Knights surpassed the 80-point mark for the second time this season and tied a program record with 15 made three-pointers.
Army showcased its depth with 12 different players contributing points, including freshman Sophia McCartney, who recorded her first career points as a Black Knight. Fellow freshman Sam Tillson added a career-high nine points.
Junior captain Reese Ericson led the charge with 14 points, shooting 50% from both the field and beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army won the opening tip, and Trinity Hardy wasted no time, scoring on a driving layup in the first possession. The teams traded baskets over the next six minutes, reaching a 7-7 tie. A Fiona Hastick layup and a Hardy three-pointer gave Army its largest lead of the quarter. However, American responded with a layup in the final 14 seconds, trimming Army's advantage to 12-9 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter began with a defensive battle, as neither team scored in the first two minutes. Camryn Tade broke the drought with a three-pointer to extend Army's lead. American answered with a layup, but the Black Knights countered with a 7-0 run over the next three minutes, pushing the margin to 22-11 with four minutes remaining in the half. After a stretch of back-and-forth scoring, an Ericson three-pointer sparked a 10-0 run to close the half, giving Army a commanding 34-17 lead at the break.
Army came out firing in the third quarter, opening with five unanswered points from an Ericson three and a Hastick layup. American knocked down two free throws, but another Ericson three-pointer stretched Army's advantage to 42-19. The Black Knights and Eagles continued to trade baskets, with Army outscoring American 24-19 in the period and taking a dominant 66-30 lead into the fourth.
With a comfortable lead, Army emptied its bench in the final quarter, allowing American to find its rhythm. The Eagles outscored the Black Knights 30-18 in the frame, but the deficit was too large to overcome, sealing an 84-60 Army victory.
